Alvina Josephine Lordemann Spieker, 95, of Hillsboro, Oregon, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014 at her beloved Green Park home.       She was surrounded by children, grandchildren, and her beloved caregivers, John & Ligia Teodosiu.

Born January 5, 1919 in Raeville, Nebraska,  Alvina was the sixth of ten children born to Henry J. and Catherine (Schrad) Lordemann. After her mother passed away when she was only ten, Alvina played an active role in assisting her dad with household duties and the care of her younger siblings. Proudly, she also became the first in her family to receive a high school diploma.

In 1940, Alvina met the love of her life, Sylvester A. (Pat) Spieker at a Christmas dance at the Parish Hall in Raeville, while he was home from Michigan for the holidays. Pat began writing letters to Alvina and convinced her to move to Detroit, where she quickly found employment at a defense plant. They wed on June 1, 1943 at St. Bonaventure Church in Raeville, Nebraska. The following month they moved to New York, where Pat began work at American Export Airlines as an airline mechanic on contract with the United States Naval Reserve. Their firstborn son, Joseph, was born on Long Island in 1944. When Pat was assigned to duty in Goose Bay, Labrador to service planes on the line during World War II, Alvina, pregnant with baby number two, and Joe returned to Nebraska.

While in Goose Bay, Pat sustained a head injury from a jet propeller and following his hospitalization and recovery, he rejoined his family in Nebraska. He began doing electrical work with his father-in-law, while Alvina cared for their growing family. In 1956, following a move to Hillsboro, Oregon with her husband and six children, she worked at Bird’s Eye Cannery and Montgomery Ward at the Vaughn Street location in NW Portland. She and Pat raised their children on seven acres in Hillsboro and celebrated 70 years of marriage on June 1, 2013. They were 57-year members of the St. Matthew parish, where Alvina was actively involved with the Altar Society and PTA. She treasured spending time raising her family, celebrating the joys of grandchildren, gatherings with friends, traveling, watching sporting events, playing cards, baking and canning, and learning to swim at 65. She dearly appreciated the friendships of Milne Court neighbors, residents and staff at Jennings McCall in Forest Grove and the loving care both she and Pat received at Green Park (formerly the Hamby house) on Jackson School Road in Hillsboro.

Alvina is survived by her children, Joseph (Judy); Marilyn (Daniel) Durkin; Ronald Spieker (Janice Johansen); Susan (Gary) Purdy; Dr. Michael (Jill) Spieker; Vivian (Eric) Feldman; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Keith (Brenda) Boone and Tanner; David (Mardi) Durkin, Drew, Andie, James and Lane; Dennis (Madeleine) Durkin, Madison, Morgan and Mae; Kathryn (Jeffrey) Durkin-Kauffman; Patrick Spieker and Martha Spieker; Cory Purdy (Kelly); Kevin Purdy (Amanda Williams), Alex and Callen (due in April); Amy Spieker and Angela Spieker;  Emma Feldman, Stephen Feldman; Kevin (Christina) Mather, and Ethan; sister, Josephine Fink of Huntington Beach, California; brother, Henry Lordemann of Glendive, Montana and numerous nephews and nieces.

Alvina was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Sylvester (Pat) Spieker, who passed away in October 2013; her parents; siblings, Ben Lordemann, Wilma Zarek, Marcella Kallhoff, Clem Palmer, Ray Lordemann, Florian Lordemann, Monica Leifeld and numerous nieces and nephews.
